REGISTERED CLINICAL COUNSELLORS (RCC)

The RCC designation is only granted to mental health professionals who have at least a masters level of education, have undergone rigorous training and supervision requirements, and who are personally recommended by both supervisors and colleagues.

In British Columbia, the RCC designation has the most stringent registration standards for mental health counsellors. Please see the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors website for specific details on criteria for membership.

CANADIAN CERTIFIED COUNSELLORS (CCC)

The CCC designation is a federal body similar to the RCC designation.  These are the 2 bodies in BC and Canada that require a Master’s in a counselling field for membership.  Please see the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association for more info.

HOW TO CHOOSE A COUNSELLOR

When you look for a counsellor, you are seeking someone to provide mental health services to you– therefore, it is important that you interview potential counselors and investigate their credentials just as you would any other professional that you were considering hiring to provide a service.

A “good fit” is a person who you find both competent and professional, but also feel a personal connection to. You will be spending many long, and sometimes difficult hours together, so it is important that you feel comfortable and at ease with your therapist.

To enhance the therapy process, get the book Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.  Read aloud to each other.  Connect.  It can make therapy cheaper if you read along (ya, I know, why am I tell you this right?), do the exercises and learn some of the concepts we’ll work on in session.  Couples who take this bit of advice seem to do better by the end of our time together.

If you have a kindle, it’s instant but shipping the paper version is fast.  The 2015 version is the best (of course).
